Non-Surgical Gum Care

You can reduce the risk from periodontal disease by brushing regularly, flossing, and visiting the Dental Care Team of Grand Blanc, MI twice a year for cleanings and check-ups.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the teeth and gums and has dire consequences if left untreated. It is the number one cause of tooth loss in the United States today. There are 3 stages to the periodontal disease – gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Gingivitis is the first stage and is caused by plaque buildup. During this stage the gums will become red and swollen.

Left unchecked, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis. As plaque and tartar work below the gum line, the gums begin to separate from the teeth forming pockets. These pockets allow more destructive bacteria access to your teeth and gums beginning your bone loss.

Over time, if periodontitis continues unchecked, bone loss continues. Eventually so much bone will be lost and your teeth will begin to loosen. Recent studies have shown that this type of infection can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream. If this happens you can be facing severe health problems.

Left Untreated Periodontal Disease Can Cause:

  • Elevated risk for heart disease
  • Blood clots
  • Heart attacks
  • Inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart
