TMJ/TMD
"TMJ" refers to the temporomandibular joint. This is the joint which hooks into your skull by each ear. Problems with this joint are called "temporomandibular disorders" or "TMD."
Inflammation and misalignment in this joint can cause a number of problems including the following:
- Pain or soreness in your jaw
- Pain around the TMJ
- Aches around your ear or face
- Difficulty chewing, opening or closing the jaw
- Locking of the jaw in an open or closed position
- Clicking when moving the jaw
- Grating sensation with you chew
Fortunately, we can help you with this problem. We can help you discover if you are grinding your teeth at night, which can irritate this joint (as well as wear down your teeth). We can find out if your jaw is poorly aligned. By providing you with a corrective appliance to wear in the mouth during sleep or advising you on how to treat the pain, we can help you recover from TMD.
